(Sub-)contracting Chains in the Chinese Building Industry – A socio-legal analysis of the identities of the chain participants and their relation to each other
My name is Pilar and I am studying Chinese Studies and just finished my Law degree. I did three month of research for my master thesis at the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, PRC.
In my research I focused on subcontracting chains in the Chinese building industry and analyzed the identities of the chain participants from a socio-legal perspective. As Guangzhou is a very important location for the Chinese building industry, I am very much looking forward to be able to do my research thanks to the awarded DAAD-Network scholarship.
I joined the University Law Clinic and was actively involved in their work. Part of the Law Clinic’s work is a collaboration with different NGOs that help workers to enforce their rights. Legal questions mainly involve payment of wages and compensations for accidents at work.
By taking part in some of the Law Clinic’s activities I had the chance to get insights of how and to which extent labour rights are enforced in practice. These experiences definitely enriched my thesis. I am very thankful that I had the chance to take part in the Law Clinic’s activities.
