My name is Katharina and I am a PhD candidate of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Cologne.
My DAAD-funded and GSSC-coordinated two month doctoral research stay on Communities of Practice in Sustainable Urban Development was situated in Cape Town, South Africa. I was involved in a volunteer-run urban farming project called the Oranjezicht City Farm (OCZF). This project connects people, organic farmers and the municipal government in their joint effort to make the city more sustainable and to support a healthier and more sustainable way of living of its residents. In this context I met lots of very interesting, passionate and inspiring people to whom I will keep contact. Being granted this amazing opportunity and being able to participate in the daily struggles of the farm members has enriched me academically as well as personally.
