Synthesis Workshop: Impact of MNEs on upgrading value chain - a comparison of three case studies: Guangzhou, Cape Town, Buenos Aires

Between 2015 and 2018 three field schools were organized in the thematic research area “Global Value Chains and Transnational Corporations: Local Effects of The Global Exchange of Products” within the DAAD T-R-EX-Network. These field schools were conducted in close cooperation with our partner universities in Guangzhou, Cape Town and Stellenbosch, and Buenos Aires. The first field school in China dealt with the very dynamic “supermarketisation“ process in Guangzhou, were traditional markets are competing with supermarkets. The second field school in Argentina focused on the drastic transformations induced by the massive expansion of the soj production, especially in and around Rosario. The third field school analyzed the South African wine industry in the leading wine producing area around Stellenbosch. The aim of the “synthesis” workshop was to cross-review the nine students reports by colleagues and students from our partner universities. As a publication of the papers is envisaged in an edited volume, we were very lucky to get helpful comments and additional inputs from Prof. Dr. Ariel Wilkis (Universidad Nacional de San Martin), Prof. Dr. Wenying Fu (now at the University of Northumbria, UK) and Herman Geyer (University of Stellenbosch) and their students in order to further improve the papers.
